Tools for Transitioning from Box Juice to Natural Juice, Let's Explore!

Greetings All,

Today I was inspired to share with you, one of the most helpful tools in my kitchen.  The juicer!

On my journey, my family and I have explored many ways to support the taste buds of our children when regarding hydration.  I had reached out to many friends who have healthy eating habits and was happy I did for a while.  The first thing to go in our house was the boxed juices.

How were we going to transition our children from the sweet tasting box juices and not get too much resistance?  I had decided to go with fresh brewed Ice Tea, sweetened with homemade simple syrup.  This went on for a while and my children were very happy with this highly sweetened caffeine replacement.  So no resistance and they were not drinking from juice boxes, yes!  A success no!
My children were happy on caffeine and simple syrup!  Much more running up and down the hall ways of the house and they were always thirsty!  Back to the beginning!

I began sharing my disappointment with my colleagues, at school.  After over hearing my story, a colleague shared with me that she makes herbal tea for her children.  Wow, why had I not thought of that. Caffeine free herbal tea with homemade simple syrup.  The children responded to this new drink with great excitement. So many flavors to choose from and the aromas filled the air like the beginning of Spring.  This lasted for a year, but it was not sugar free.  Sugar was effecting their mood, need to change our beverage of choice, Again!

One late night years ago, I was watching TV infomercials.  I saw this amazing tool that turned fruit into fruit juice.  What!  I immediately grabbed the telephone and ordered a Juicer.   I had found the tool that would change our world.  I could make fruit juice for my family and walk with my head high knowing there was no added juice in their cups!!  Is it time consuming yes, the benefits are amazing!  I encourage any one who is on this journey to invest in a quality juicer, let me know how your life changes!!)

Take Time For You!

Hi All,

I had to take time out for me, so I have not paid any attention to my blog.  I'm back!

Today's focus: You

One day I was in the kitchen pressing clothes, my then boyfriend asked me a question, till this day I do not remember the question.  I do remember feeling an overwhelming sensation of emotions and the urge to explode.  Well, I did! I began to scream out loud while splashes of tears fell upon the clothes I was pressing.  My heart ached and my hands wailed about.  My two sons and my boyfriend were at a lost for words, they just stood and watched.  My boyfriend walked towards me and pulled me into an embrace, while I thought that was what I needed, it just made me more upset.  Why? Why was I exploding like this at 6:30 am in the morning, on a work day, in front of my family.  I had lost it.

Later that morning, I called my wisdom, my mother, she explained that I had a "meltdown", a "moment" a "you need time for you, girl" moment.  Me, not me, not the super woman who went to college while raising a toddler and working full time. Not Me, the mom who wakes up every morning with the sun to make sure clothes are pressed, lunches are made and the household is ready to go.  The mom who stays after work 3 to 4 times out of her 5 day work week to ensure things go smoothly at work the next day. Yes, it was me.

I felt like a failure, how could I explode like that, loose control!  I went back to my beginnings, meditation.  I made an agreement with myself, take time out for you! So now, I intentionally rise a half hour before my household to take care of my needs.  I meditated, say affirmations, and drink warm water.  I have time to walk and think in a quiet space and I enjoy every minute of it.

In today's fast paced world, take time for you.  Become the person you know you can be.  A very good friend of mine who is also my first son's godmother, gave me a gift and it now sits on my alter. The plaque reads, "Do ONE thing Every day that makes you HAPPY".

This has been my goal every day since my "moment".  I am a stronger, braver and much more emotionally responsive today for making time for me every day.  You will too!

Thanks for dropping by!

Take Care of You,

In Transition: Tips to get started

Hello,
It has taken me a while to figure out what to write about next, however, my travels within my own community inspired me.

Shopping in the hood
As I sit and chat with many of my friends who are also mothers, the one theme that arose again and again, "where has all the food gone!"  Aisle to aisle you see packages, cans, boxes..etc  OK, so food items have to be preserved as they travel, right, you want a nice looking product at the end.

This is when the real work begins.  So you pick up a package/can/box and you smile, say, "I have what I want", then drop the food item into your cart.  While you are contemplating how you will use this food item, you forgot to use the first rule of food shopping, READ!  You are what you eat, remember.

When I was a teenager, my mom would send me out to the market. She would always say," Don't forget to look at the can/box etc., if you bring me the wrong one, I'll send you back" motivation to do it right the first time (miss those days, lol)  It took me several times to get it right according to my mom.  Today I not only Look at the label, I Read them too! Mom is very happy about this!!)

As you pick up that package/can/box, READ the ingredients.   If you can read the words and understand them that's a keeper!  If the label is full of unpronounceable additives, PUT IT BACK! This is for the beginner, until you become familiar with reading labels, just make life easier for yourself.  Here's an example of a box of pasta I would pick up below.

There are only two ingredients (vit/min too) listed on this box. This would be a keeper! I can read with understanding, yes.
Resources
Very early on my journey, I began to collect resources to aid with food shopping and reading labels. I used articles from the Internet, yet it was not complete. I picked up pamphlets from health fairs and worked with a nutritionist. Still needed to piece together this healthy living "thing'.   I became a member of the Feingold Association (www.feingold.org) for a year.  The book contains so much information, I did not purchased another book for years. I would recommend purchasing the Feingold Handbook if you can or visit their website.

Nowadays, you can download books and/or look at YouTube videos.  If you want to dive right in, go to this site: www.enoughmovement.com #TruthAboutFood.  I also have a book to recommend for an easy read, the youth edition, "The Omnivore's Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat", By Michael Pollan   Last year I purchased an ebook by Chef Ahki, "Electric: A Modern Guide to Non-Hybrid & Wild Foods".  Her recipes are so creative, I also appreciated that the first several pages are dedicated to the understanding of Food and Nutrition.

READ my peeps!

Challenge
I know some of my readers may be on to the next stage, deciphering labels.  Here is a photo of Flour by two different name brands.  Which one would you pick up and why?  You can leave your answer in the comment box.

Water is Life

Every morning I drink a cup of warm water. Sometimes with herbal supplements and sometimes with lime.  I know that cup of water is going to refresh my body internally and move toxins that may have accumulated in places during sleep.

I would encourage my family and friends to purchase a water filter and/or buy bottled water.  I would highly recommend for everyone to begin to drink Spring water.  If you read the label, lol, on the sides of real spring water, you will notice a list of minerals and their percentage.  This is the reason for drinking spring water for the minerals.
Mineral Composition and PH balance indicated on real spring water bottles

Tap water is overly processed and has added ingredients one being fluoride, which if you are not aware, Fluoride is harmful to humans and animals too.  I have included some links for further reading.

Whats in Your Water

I will share a story..

I have been working with several people who are interested in improving their overall health.  One lady is working on stamina throughout the day.  I shared with her the importance of drinking water daily.  In one week's time, I was approached by the same woman, who shared she was now able to walk up and down the stairs without feeling exhausted!  Bravo to her, all because she drank some water!  Water is Life!

You do not have to believe anything I say, Always do your own research.

My first post!

Hello World,

Today I embark on a new journey! I am ready to share my passions with you about healthy eating, mindfulness and Yoga!

I began my journey some years ago when my first child was diagnosed with ADHD.  I was a graduate student at the time and began to read the research on ADHD and ways families were dealing with this challenge. I read articles, bought books, purchased behaviors systems and sought out therapy.  All of my research lead me to the same understanding Nutrition needed to be addressed first.  I went to see a Nutritionist with my son and together we began to learn about ways to improve our health.

First we learned how to read labels, one of the best skills you can have!  We paid attention to what we brought into our house.  Food shopping was now an adventure!  So we were adding more vegetable to our meals, added herbal teas and more fruit to our diet.  Yet, my son still struggled with aggression and we were still getting suffering from colds/allergies.  I began to do more research, it was 2011.

One day while searching for videos on health on YouTube, I came across a video about a man named Dr. Sebi.  I was blown away by his honestly and his knowledge of foods and herbs.  I continued to watch his videos and learned about Alkaline foods, natural vs. unnatural, spring water and herbs.  This is what had been missing from all of my research, knowledge of the foods/fruits/vegetables we consume.  I had awaken to what my ancestors had known for years, You are What You eat!

Today in 2017, I am a proud mommy of three beautiful seeds, a wife, an educator, a Yoga teacher and a lover of Life.  However, there is so much more to do!  Come back and check out my blog and learn more about my journey and how I am now helping others to heal themselves!
